I don’t think I am the only one that has been exclusively using Airbnb in the past few years. Travelling at least 3-4 times a year, I can recall many situations where it saved my trip. This fantastic website has been a go to resource for travellers for years and has provided an easy way to find cheap accommodation all around the world and the possibility to live as a local for a few days or weeks and recently has introduced Airbnb Experiences.
How To Qualify As An Airbnb Experience Guide
The first step, of course, is to have an experience to share with potential guests. The task can be anything from showing visitors around your hometown to teaching guests how cook delicious local meals. Here in Italy the food and wine experiences are very popular. If you think you have something unique and exciting to offer, especially something famous about your city and country, you will reach a lot of success!
I personally love photography, so as soon as I learned about them, I put my Photoshoot Experience listing up.
The overall process was a bit rough the first few months because I didn’t have any reviews but now it is rising steadily.
When looking through applications, Airbnb likes to consider hosts that are empathetic, credible, knowledgeable about their activity and can be genuine about their overall experience with the potential guests.
Every experience needs to feel unique to a visitor, hold it’s own individual meaning. This doesn’t mean you can’t put up a duplicate idea for your experience content. What it means, however, is that it is essential to add your own twist.
Take a long time planning out your experience, and when you add it to the website, try to add as much detail as possible. Treat it with just as much importance as you would your Airbnb listing. Pictures, wording, and everything about how you display your listing is vital.
Getting Bookings, Good Reviews And Making Money
Airbnb spends a lot of time on vetting their experiences. Quality control is a very high priority for the company, especially with the recent plans for expansion. Their current goal is to try and figure out what makes a host great on a global scale.
A variety of experiences are currently available for guests to enjoy, many of which involve a great few hour adventures often less than $100 a person.
A huge difference between hosting your home and an experience is your passion. This is especially important with Airbnb experiences as opposed to bed&breakfasts because you need to be present the whole time.
With guests coming from all over the world, patience and empathy are very important attributes.
What Are Some Of The Most Successful Airbnb Experiences?
Across the world, the next big adventure is just around the corner. Being a tourist on your own and trying to discover a new location is exhausting. There’s just too much to do as an outsider.
Here are some of the most exciting and successful Airbnb experiences that I’ve come across. Study what makes these experiences success and think about how you can add to your own application.
As a fun note, based on Airbnb statistics, food and cooking events have been popular consistently throughout the world.
- Los Angeles, California – Take a hike up to the Hollywood sign. It allows for a fantastic view of the city.
- Paris, France – Get a tour from a comedian through the Louvre.
- Florence, Italy – Learn how to handmade pasta with an Italian family.
- Tokyo, Japan – Learn how to roll and create your own sushi.
- Sydney, Australia – Take a surfing class along the shore, then check out a great beachside restaurant.
- Toronto, Canada – Take a historic tour of Toronto’s distillery district.
- Lisbon, Portugal – Lisbon’s Best Flavors is a food and social tour raved by foodie bloggers.
- London, England – One of Britain’s best-kept secrets is a small concert treehouse. A small loft space in the heart of Shoreditch is transformed into a beautiful place to listen to classical piano music.
- New York City, New York – There are so many historical tours to take in the city that never sleeps. One of which takes through through the days of the prohibition to one of New York’s last standing speakeasies from the 1920’s.
- Milan Italy – Photoshoot with the beautiful streets and architecture as a backdrop.
How have Airbnb Experiences have worked for me?
I have loved working with Airbnb experiences so far. I put my listing up in mid September and I got my first guest on the 14th of October.
The flow of bookings has steadily been rising in the past few months and the month of December has been especially successful.
This is my listing : Photoshoot in Milan
My Advice to you:
Be knowledgeable, be polite and be precise and very detailed on what you offer on your listing.
How Much Can You Make With Airbnb Experiences?
First of all it depends on your location and the type of experience that you offer. If you live in New York or LA or many European destinations you can keep your prices higher than average.
As it is difficult to estimate the exact earnings of each experience host, we can estimate that by hosting an experience twice a week with an average price of 60$ per person, for 3 people at a time, you can earn an easy gross of $60,00 x 3 guests x 2 times per week x 4 times a month= $1440,00
You would have to take off 20%*1440=$290,00 in fees that Airbnb retains, that would be about $1150,00 a month. This is only for a few hours of work each week.
